Step into the strange, shadowy world of Robert Wiene's <i>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)</i>, on the big screen with live piano accompaniment by visiting pianist Bruce Vogt.</div><div><br></div><div>With its jagged sets and nightmarish atmosphere, Caligari helped define German Expressionism and shaped horror films for decades after. A century on, it's still unsettling, and a live improvised score only makes it more so.</div><div><br></div><div>Three spooky silent shorts round out the program: Georges Méliès' <i>Le Monstre (1903)</i>, <i>Edison Studios' Frankenstein (1910)</i>, and the 1928 American version of <i>The Fall of the House of Usher</i>. He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across North America, Europe and Asia, and has mentored generations of young artists as professor of piano at the University of Victoria.</span><div><span style="font-size: 14px;"><br></span></div><span style="font-size: 14px;">Alongside his concert work, Bruce has developed a specialty in improvising live piano accompaniments for silent films.
