Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

Based on a novel by Fannie Flagg: On one of trapped housewife Evelyn Couch’s (Kathy Bates) Wednesday nursing home visits, she encounters Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy), a colorful old woman who brightens Evelyn’s outlook by sharing tales from her past. As Ninny recounts the exploits of her free-spirited sister-in-law Idgie, owner of a small Alabama café in the 1920s, and the bond Idgie shared with her friend Ruth, Evelyn gains the confidence to change her own life for the better. Part of the series Screen Bound, hosted by The Cinema Society of Kingston: Read the book, watch the movie—or just watch the movie! Join the Cinema Society of Kingston for a film series of literary adaptations, each followed by a fun, book-club-style discussion. "One of the strongest things in the film is Ms. Masterson, a magnetic, wildly defiant actress with so much energy she often seems to be bursting at the seams of her role." – New York Times "Tandy is at her sparkling best as the endearing old story-teller. Bates is also terrif in a funny and sympathetic turn. Director Jon Avnet, in his feature film debut, gets first-rate work from the featured performers." – VarietyDramaPT2H10MRated PG2025-06-08
