Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965)
Part of the series Sci-Fi July, hosted by The Cinema Society of Kingston. The film will be introduced by programmer William Jennings.
Considered a non-canonical oddity by most fans of the original television show, this big screen adaptation of the hit UK children's sci-fi adventure series, Doctor Who, remains, along with it's singular sequel, the only true cinematic outing for the eccentric alien time-traveler. Starring Peter Cushing as the titular timelord, this light-hearted reinterpretation of the original show's early years shines in its charming Technicolor brilliance, despite being rife with kinds of contradictions of cannon and lapses of lore that would drive a die-hard 'Whovian' crazy. And for those of us who grew up during the barren years of the TV show's sixteen year hiatus after being cancelled in 1989, this film is often remembered as an early introduction to the cult oddity that was Doctor Who, as both Dalek films enjoyed the occasional late-night run on television throughout the '90s and early-2000s. But regardless of its oft-maligned status by hardcore fans, Dr. Who & The Daleks stands out as a colourful, if not slightly naive big-budget adaptation of the gothic, black-and-white serials of the early-1960s.Science FictionPT1H22MRated G2025-07-20Peter Cushing
