Contempt (1963) & Uncle Yanco (1967)

Part of Summer Burn, a series of four arthouse classics set in sun-drenched Europe. The film will be preceeded by Agnes Varda's short film, Uncle Yanco (1968). Life imitates art in Jean-Luc Godard’s enduring masterpiece about the bitter compromises and trade-offs of love and cinema. Seduced by bigwig producer Jerry Prokosch (Jack Palance) into salvaging a troubled adaption of Homer’s Odyssey, writer Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli) struggles to retain his artistic integrity as well as his flailing marriage to Camille (Brigitte Bardot) who quickly catches Jerry’s eye. Shot in stunning CinemaScope on location in Rome and Capri amidst the rising phenomena of the international co-production and widescreen technology, Contempt remains one of the pinnacles of the medium even as it puts a magnifying glass to the turbulent relationship between art and industry at its very core. About Uncle Yanco (1968): In her effervescent first California film, Agnès Varda delves into her own family history. The short documentary Uncle Yanco features Varda tracking down a Greek emigrant relative she’s never met, discovering an artist and kindred soul leading a bohemian life in Sausalito.DramaPT2H2MRated 14A2026-05-29
